Rebates for Pharmacy Cash Transaction Data
Many pharmacies do a significant amount of business on a cash basis, where no insurance claims or reimbursements occur. These transactions may be eligible for rebates from product manufacturers in exchange for information on sales volume and pricing of these products.
No patient or HIPAA-related information is exchanged in the process. Manufacturers use the volume and pricing information for pricing studies and market research to inform future decisions.
Products that are NOT eligible for rebates include:
- Those covered by an insurance plan
- Over-the-counter medications
- Pain medications (including hydrocodone)
Prior to beginning the program, an agent for the manufacturer will review the pharmacy’s cash transaction history and advise on the typical expected monthly rebate amount.
