GS1 Databar-only coupons likely to appear in the next few months |
GS1 DATABAR-ONLY COUPONS LIKELY TO APPEAR IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS
The coupon industry is progressing through a transition from coupons using the UPC barcode to coupons using the new GS1 DataBar barcode. For most of 2011, manufacturers have been distributing coupons with both the UPC and GS1 DataBar barcodes.
During November and December, many of the larger manufacturers plan to begin distributing coupons with only the GS1 DataBar barcode. Manufacturers believe that most retailers are now ready to scan the new barcode and that the timing is right to drop the UPC codes from their coupons. By the new year, a significant percentage of coupons distributed should have only the new GS1 DataBar barcode.
ProLogic's processing facilities are fully capable of processing coupons with the GS1 Databar barcode. For more information on GS1 Databar, download ProLogic's whitepaper entitled "GS1 DataBar: What Does it Mean for Retailers?"

COUPON AND LOYALTY CARD CONVERGENCE DRIVES GROWTH IN MOBILE APPS
According to a recent article by eMarketer, more than 35 million U.S. consumers will use a mobile coupon by 2013. By 2014, redemption value is expected to top nearly $6 billion worldwide. Several factors are driving these increases, including growing adoption rates for mobile apps that link digital coupons to customer loyalty programs.
Using a variety of geo-location, communication and coupon-aggregation technologies, load-to-card coupon apps such as ShopKick and ScanIt! link mobile offers to loyalty programs via smartphones. Already gaining traction among grocery retailers, coupon and loyalty apps are expected to become an integral part of mobile marketing strategies in the coming months. Read more about these trends in articles from Retail Leader, Grocery Headquarters, and Progressive Grocer.
